Wee Free Men

~Of Orient Are...~

Oh, wait. That's not quite right.

So, my current read is Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. I am very much enjoying this book! It's another one of those "I can't wait to get home and read more" type of books. And I hear there is a sequel! Yay!!

There are little blue men who talk funny. A spunky girl who tackles strange creatures without much thought as to why she is seeing them, or that she should probably run away. Witches, fairies, magic and more!

In other book news, I have a growing pile of books to read next. Don't I always?

I am also looking for books to add to my MP3 player so I can listen to them whilst traveling next week. I have a couple already, but I would like one or two more backup titles...just in case I don't like what I have! Please give suggestions. In case you can't tell, I've been in a fantasy and/or historical fiction type of mode lately. Since the books I have are in the car, y'all will just have to wait to find out what the titles are. I can't remember off the top of my head, and I'm not about to go outside and check right now. lol

As I mentioned, I'll be traveling soon. I leave next Wednesday for Detroit. Thursday morning, bright and early, I'll board a plane bound for Minneapolis/St. Paul. There I will wait a bit before boarding another plane bound for California...and the American Libraries Association's Annual Conference. Yay! I'll be in Anaheim until July 2, when I will fly back to Detroit (with another layover in Minneapolis/St. Paul). My plane lands on July 3. Sometime that day I'll make the 3.5 hour drive back home to Yo-town.

Want free books?

I know there are at least a few people reading this blog...and I hope to snag a few more readers...

So. Here's the dealio. If you are reading...post a comment or few. If I get enough people commenting - perhaps some discussions here and there, I will start giving away books.

Yes. Books.

For free.

FREE BOOKS! YAY!

Who doesn't love free books? (well, besides those "freaks" who don't think reading is fun?)

I hear you asking, "What kind of free books?" What does it matter...they are free.

Seriously, though, I have teen books, children's books...even some adult titles! Where do I get them? I've bought them, been given them, etc. Some I've read. Some are brand spankin' new. I can only keep so many for myself, and I want to share the wealth.

So, let me know you are out there, and I will start passing along the goodies.

SRC kickoff event

Tonight we had one of the kickoff events for Summer Reading Club. As I said before, the theme this year is Catch the Reading Bug!

The program included 2 crafts (caterpillars and butterflies), a music performance by a local musician, refreshments (pizza before the music, ice cream sundaes after), and prize drawings.

The crowd was decent - especially for such a beautiful day. The program was a lot of fun!

For the crafts:

Caterpillars

materials needed: clothespins, pompoms (about 6 dime sized per caterpillar), mini-googley eyes, glue, magnet strips

glue the pompoms onto a clothespin.
glue two eyes onto the 1st pompom
affix magnet strip (cut to appropriate size) to the back of the clothespin.

Butterflies

materials needed: bingo daubers/dot art daubers, coffee filters, pipe cleaners (cut in half)

decorate a coffee filter with the daubers.
scrunch middle of coffee filter
twist pipe cleaner in the middle.

Photos of the crafts can be provided upon request!

The musician - Chip Richter - was great! He sounded wonderful, and was very personable - both with the audience and with the staff. I would hire him again (if budget allows).

Beyond the Deep Woods

On a different note....

I finished this audiobook tonight. It was eh. Too much action. Too much drama. Perhaps because there were two authors? I'm not sure. I haven't decided if I will read or listen to the next book in the series.

When Twig's mother - a wood troll - sends him off to stay with relatives, Twig dismisses her advice and strays from the past. Lost in the Deepwoods, he falls into one batch of trouble after another.

Maybe it was the narrator, but I thought Twig was much too whiny. I wanted to offer him a bit of cheese to go with that whine (har har har).

So, I give this book a *yawn* and say read it if you are looking for something and can't find anything else. It's not the worst that I've listened to, but definitely not the greatest.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Don't walk...RUN to your local library (or the library's website) and place this book on hold NOW!

Yes. I enjoyed it that much. I couldn't wait to get home from work so I could read more. That hasn't happened in some time!

In my humble (but of course, all important - ha ) opinion, this book rocks. Meyer surpasses the writing skills showcased in the Twilight books in this "sci-fi lite" book. While there are aliens, they just don't seem like, well, aliens. It's a great story and well told.

Though, Meyer seems to have a thing for the whole "two men in love with one woman" storyline. At least in The Host, there are actually two women...they just share a body.

So...just do it. Read this book. Now. Or as soon as you can get a copy.

Book update

Yes. Another book update.

As I previously said, I’ve been in a reading funk lately. It seems to be getting better. I’m enjoying both listening to the audiobook that’s in my car’s CD player (The Edge Chronicles #1: Beyond the Deepwoods by Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell), and reading the lasted tome by Stephenie Meyer (The Host).

Beyond the Deepwoods
is a children’s fantasy book. There are times I’m annoyed with the story (for instance, seems like one bad thing after another happens to Twig – the main character), but that may be enhanced by the narrator. I’m not sure I like him.

As for The Host – well, I like this sci-fi novel by Stephenie Meyer a lot more than her quite famous vampire series (Twilight). Granted, I did overall enjoy Twilight – even if I want to take a clue-by-four to several of the principle characters. The Host leaves the vampires behind in Forks, and brings us face to face with alien occupation and domination of the planet. I’m about one third to one half of the way through the book and can’t wait to pick it up and read more!

And that is all I have on the plate right now. Well…if you don’t count the unfinished Prom Nights from Hell. I really should finish the last story in it…or give up and write about the others.
