A Faraway Island
A Faraway Island by Annika Thor
In hopes of keeping them safe from the Nazis, Stephie and Nellie have been sent from their home in Austria to a remote island in Sweden. Neither one speaks Swedish. The two sisters are sent to separate foster homes. Nellie quickly adapts to her new life, while older sister Stephie has a much harder time adjusting.
Concentrating on Stephie’s troubles fitting in with her new home and dealing with homesickness and missing her parents and best friend, this novel, the first in a four part series, is a fantastic slice of historical fiction. It is no surprise that the books are so popular in Sweden that it has been made into a television series.
The book won the 2010 Batchelder Award for best translated book from another language into English.
