The Quiet Book by Deborah Underwood; illustrated by Renata Liwska
There are many types of quiet, and in this softly sweet storybook several are outlined, from “First one awake quiet.” to “Sound asleep quiet.” The typical actions of children throughout the day are beautifully illustrated as animals drawn in pencil and colored digitally.
This is one of those picture books that I want to frame prints of the pages. The fuzzy, soft animals depicted throughout the pages perfectly accompany the text.
Born yesterday: the diary of a young journalist by James Solheim; illustrated by Simon James
Beginning on July 7 with Baby’s birth, this book is the story of her first year in the world – from her own point of view. Baby is excited to learn about the world, and that she has a super-chick person for a big sister. There’s so much to see and do in the real world, but first Baby needs to figure out a few things, like growing big, getting to school and how to get out of her playpen.
The watercolor and ink illustrations are adorable. I particularly like that the background of every page is lined like a sheet of notebook paper.
