And the winners are...(Part 2)

My mini-breakdown of the winners:

Newbery Medal

  • Moon over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool – haven’t read it. Now have it on hold.

Newbery Honors:

  • Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm – don’t know anything about it.
  • Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus – recognized the cover. Haven’t read it.
  • Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Rick Allen – haven’t seen it…yet.
  • One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia – read it. Not surprised it got an honor, as it had a lot of buzz. Don’t know that I think it should have gotten an honor, though.

Caldecott Medal:

  • A Sick Day for Amos McGee illustrated by Erin E. Stead – not surprised. Have glanced at it. Need to look at it in more detail.

Caldecott Honors:

  • Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave illustrated by Bryan Collier, written by Laban Carrick Hill – not surprised. Have glanced at it. Need to look at it in more detail.
  • Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein - thought is was an adorable book. Never considered it for Caldecott.
Printz Award
  • Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi – cover looks familiar. Will read it soon.

Printz Honor Books:

  • Stolen by Lucy – Happy to see this win at least an honor. I thought it was well written.
  • Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King – haven’t read it.
  • Revolver by Marcus – haven’t read it.
  • Nothing by Janne Teller – haven’t read it.

Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award

  • One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia – Read it. Thought it was decent. See additional comments above.

King Author Honor Books:
  • Lockdown by Walter Dean Myers – haven’t read it, but not surprised.
  • Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes – have read. Enjoyed.
  • Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty – a graphic novel! Haven’t read it, but have a copy in my bag that I will read soon.

Coretta Scott King (Illustrator) Book Award

King Illustrator Honor Book:
  • Jimi Sounds Like a Rainbow: A Story of the Young Jimi Hendrix illustrated by Javaka Steptoe, written by Gary Golio – haven’t read yet

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent (Author) Award
  • Zora and Me by Victoria Bond and T. R. Simon – have heard some buzz on it, but not read yet

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent (Illustrator) Award
  • Seeds of Change illustrated by Sonia Lynn Sadler, written by Jen Cullerton – haven’t read it.

Schneider Family Book Award

  • The Pirate of Kindergarten by George Ella Lyon, illustrated by Lynne Avril (ages 0 to 10) – sounds cute. I need to find it.
  • After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick (ages 11-13). – haven’t read
  • Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John (ages 13-18) – reading now and enjoying. So far it’s a great read

Alex Awards for the 10 best adult books that appeal to teen audiences
  • The Reapers Are the Angels: A Novel by Alden Bell
  • The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake: A Novel by Aimee Bender
  • The House of Tomorrow by Peter Bognanni
  • Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue
  • The Vanishing of Katharina Linden: A Novel by Helen Grant
  • The Radleys by Matt Haig
  • The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton
  • Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
  • Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard by Liz Murray

Um…these are adult novels. I haven’t heard of most – if any. I have a tendency to avoid most adult books.


Laura Ingalls Wilder Award
  • Tomie dePaola

I’m not a huge Tomie dePaola fan, but due appreciate the wealth of his work.

Margaret A. Edwards Award
  • Sir Terry Pratchett
I’ve only read a couple of Pratchett’s books and loved them both.


Mildred L. Batchelder Award

  • A Time of Miracles. by Anne-Laure Bondoux, translated by Y. Maudet – haven’t read. May look in to it.

Batchelder Honor Books:
  • Departure Time by Truus Matti and translated by Nancy Forest-Flier– haven’t read. May look in to it.
  • Nothing by Janne Teller and translated by Martin Aitken. – haven’t read. May look in to it.
Odyssey Award

The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex and narrated by Bahni Turpin. – haven’t listened to the audio or read the book.

Odyssey Honor Recordings:
  • Alchemy and Meggy Swann by Karen Cushman and narrated by Katherine Kellgren. Read the book. Narrator is an awesome one, so I may have to get the audiobook.
  • The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness and narrated by Nick Podehl – haven’t listened to the audio or read the book.
  • Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly and narrated by Emily Janice Card and Emma Bering – haven’t listened to the audio or read the book.
  • will grayson, will grayson by John Green and David Levithan, and narrated by MacLeod Andrews and Nick Podehl. – haven’t listened to the audio or read the book. Might have to change that soon.

Pura Belpré (Author) Award

  • The Dreamer by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Haven’t read it, but not surprised it won.

Belpré Author Honor Books:
  • ¡Olé! Flamenco by George Ancona - Haven’t read it
  • The Firefly Letters: A Suffragette’s Journey to Cuba by Margarita Engles – read it last year (an ARC). Enjoyed. Not surprised it got an honor.
  • 90 Miles to Havana by Enrique Flores-Galbis - Haven’t read it

Pura Belpré (Illustrator) Award
  • Grandma’s Gift illustrated and written by Eric Velasquez - Haven’t read it

Belpré Illustrator Honors:
  • Fiesta Babies illustrated by Amy Córdova, written by Carmen Tafolla - Haven’t read it
  • Me, Frida illustrated by David Diaz, written by Amy Novesky - Haven’t read it, but have heard of it.
  • Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin illustrated and written by Duncan - Haven’t read it, but have heard of it.

Robert F. Sibert Medal

  • Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World’s Strangest Parrot by Sy Montgomery, is the 2011 Sibert Award winner. The book features photographs by Nic Bishop - Haven’t read it.

Sibert Honors:
  • Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan, illustrated by Brian Floca- Haven’t read it, but have heard of it.
  • Lafayette and the American Revolution by Russell Freedman - Haven’t read it, but have heard of it.

Stonewall Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award

  • Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher- Haven’t read it.

Stonewall honor books:
  • will grayson, will grayson by John Green and David Levithan - Haven’t read it, but have heard of it.
  • Love Drugged by James Klise - Haven’t read it.
  • Freaks and Revelations by Davida Willis Hurwin - Haven’t read it.
  • The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams, illustrated by Quentin Blake- Haven’t read it.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award
  • Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee – not overly surprised.

Two Geisel Honor Books:
  • Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same! by Grace Lin – not overly surprised.
  • We Are in a Book! by Mo Willems – not overly surprised.


William C. Morris Award
  • The Freak Observer by Blythe Woolston – The only one that was a finalist that I hadn’t read! I started it on Sunday.

Four other books were finalists for the award:
  • Hush by Eishes Chayil – Very well written, though I have a few issues with it. Look for a review soon.
  • Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey – see recent review
  • Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride – see recent review (this was my pick of the ones I finished)
  • Crossing the Tracks by Barbara Stuber – see recent review

YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults
  • Janis Joplin: Rise Up Singing by Ann Angel – haven’t read it, but have heard of it.

Four other books were finalists for the award:
  • They Called Themselves the K.K.K.: The Birth of an American Terrorist Group by Susan Campbell – haven’t read it, but have heard of it.
  • Spies of Mississippi: The True Story of the Spy Network that Tried to Destroy the Civil Rights Movement by Rick Bowers
  • The Dark Game: True Spy Stories by Paul
  • Every Bone Tells a Story: Hominin Discoveries, Deductions, and Debates by Jill Rubalcaba and Peter Robertshaw – recently read. Look for upcoming review.
