CSK Illustrator award

I wasn’t planning to concentrate on the CorettaScott King Illustrator Awards this year.  I blame thank Brindi for diverting my focus to them.  After we finished reading all of the Caldecott books, we continued the picture book mania with another illustrator award; hoping to finish all 96 books by the end of August. We completed that goal with several days to spare.

According to my Goodreads.com ratings, there were twelve books that I felt were the best.  These titles, listed below in alphabetical order, were all given five stars.

• Just Us Women by Jeannette Franklin Caines; illustrated by Pat Cummings (1983 Honor)
• Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport; illustrated by Bryan Collier (2002 Honor)
• The Middle Passage: White Ships/ Black Cargo written and illustrated by Tom Feelings (1996 Winner)
• My People by Langston Hughes; illustrated by Charles S. Smith, Jr. (2010 Winner)
• Thunder Rose by Jerdine Nolen; illustrated by Kadir Nelson (2004 Honor)
• Underground: Finding the Light to Freedom written and illustrated by Shane W. Evans (2012 Winner)
• Visiting Langston by Willie Perdono; illustrated by Bryan Collier (2003 Honor)
